This Day In Country Music History
The number one song on this date in 1963 was "The Ballad Of Jed Clampett" by Flatt and Scruggs.
The number one song on this date in 1957 was "Singing the Blues" by Marty Robbins. (This and "In the Jailhouse Now" by Webb Pierce were the first two songs I remember, and both of them I heard from the jukebox at my grandmothers cafe in North Terre Haute, Indiana.)
The number one song on this date in 1956 was the Merle Travis penned "Sixteen Tons" performed by our old pea-pickin' partner from Bristol, Tennessee Ernie Ford.
Doug Kershaw is 72 today. Did you know that he is an accomplished guitarist as well as fiddler. If he takes request, ask him to do "Jambalaya" on the guitar. You won't be disappointed.
The girl that has Jones on the Jukebox, and somebody on her mind, Becky Hobbs, is 58 today. For the last few years, she has been at Billy Yates Countriest of the Country shows during what was formerly known as Fan Fair week.
In 1998, on this date, Justin Tubb passed on. He was a great singer-songwriter, and entertainer, and in my times meeting him, one of the most candid interviews one could do. If Nashville would have listened to him, we would still be getting a steady diet of good country music.
